Who can help me go dreadlock in Boulder?

topic posted Wed, December 12, 2007 - 6:02 PM by  monocongo
I'm looking for someone in Boulder who can help me turn my long hair into dreadlocks. I know it's a bit of a chore to do for a stranger (i.e. lots of back combing, etc.) so I don't mind paying or trading for the time, or even going to a salon if the stylist is experienced and can do it without using perms, chemicals, wax, etc. I'm not planning to do this right away, but I wanted to go ahead and put out feelers to see if I can find someone to do it for me locally (I don't want to trek to Denver for this if I can avoid it). Please respond if you can recommend someone to help me with this, thanks in advance!

How about the elements of earth, water, air? We have plenty of that here in Boulder, and you could let them happen naturally. Not everything I've heard about backcombing is positive. You might want to check out the dreadtribe or dreadlocks tribe. I'm letting my hair dread... and I have opted to go natural after doing some research. It's your choice, just make sure you've got the full story. Hair takes a long time to grow, and if you are patient with the process, you could prevent the dissappointment of a quick fix gone "a stray hair"... hehe. Just my humble opinion Boulder Brother. Good Luck on the journey.... it's quite the adventure.

Thanks for the responses sierra, Ever, and Mikey.

I already don't comb or brush my hair, and I haven't for most of my life. It's so straight I don't have to, I just wash it every day and let it air dry. My hair would almost certainly not dread on its own unless I washed less frequently and wore a wool hat all day every day, and even then it'd take probably several years before it looked decent, and I might get skinny dreads and I want them thick. I reckon that by back combing I can have them much quicker, and with less of the in between stage where your head really just looks a mess (no disrespect to those more patient than me who are dreading naturally).

This thread reminds me of a sign that I saw once upon a time on a light pole in Goa, India. There was a dark-inked portrait of a rasta man with lion mane of dreadlocks, looking like he was singing (or maybe blowing smoke). Very bold, irie type declared: "PROFESSIONAL DREADLOCKS - Wednesdays at 7 P.M. - Mohan's Cafe in Little Vagator"

I assumed that it was a poster for a reggae band. I re-read it and I figured that it couldn't mean anything else.

That Wednesday I got all dressed up and headed on down to Mohan's cafe, ready to get my groove on. But when I saw there was no band there, my heart sank. It was very quiet and I worried that I had shown up on the wrong night. I looked around for anything reggae-related and I saw a Swiss guy with long blonde dreadlocks. I asked him if he knew when Professional Dreadlocks is coming on. He said.. "Oh.. 'dat iz me. I do zee professional dreadlock brading, matting, styling... you know."

He looked at my short hair and asked if I wanted to get started with dreadlocks. I thought about it for a moment and decided I'd better off undercover.

I wish he were here to help you, cause his dreads were very nice and he was truly a professional - I'm sure. You never know exactly when and where you will encounter another one.

Ok, I have the exact same question. Many people have hair that dreads naturally. Mine however will not. I have tried not washing it for two weeks outside, worked out and got my head sweaty and gnarly, washing it 5 or 6 times in one day to get it really dry and cohesive, and right now I am in the process of maintaining dreads that my roomate put in with honey. The honey has since washed out and my dreads are simply returning to straight hair even with maintenance a couple of times a day and she also spent at least 3 hours backcombing twisting and layering honey into it. She says my hair is too fine but I cant take that as an answer. Please help. Thank you.
